 Freeman-Kennedy School Instrumental Music Program

Beginner Level

The Instrumental Music Program is open to students in grades four through six. All who choose to participate are given the opportunity to learn about music in a variety of settings, which include lessons, sectionals, two weekly morning band rehearsals, and two performances. Participation in all is required.  The following instruments are available for study, and will be demonstrated to our students by the award winning King Philip High School Marching Band on Tuesday, September 12th:  flute, clarinet, alto sax, trumpet, trombone, and percussion.  Please read on to answer any further questions.

Can any child play?

YES! No special talent is needed...with practice and support from home, lessons and musical organizations at school; any child can find success in learning a musical instrument.

What lessons are offered?

Lessons, sectionals, and band rehearsals are offered at the beginner level for the flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and percussion.

Lessons

The lessons are taught in small groups during school for 30 minutes.  Our schedule rotates so each student will not miss the same 30 minutes of class time each week.  If a teacher feels that it is necessary for a student to miss a lesson, the student will be responsible for getting a note to Mr. Fouracre from that teacher.  The student will also be responsible for finding out what was introduced in the lesson.  Weekly homework assignments are given at the end of each lesson, and students are expected to come prepared the following week.  Thirty minutes of home practice time five days a week is recommended.  All students should also be responsible for knowing when lessons take place. A master schedule will be posted in the main office, classrooms, and each student will be given his or her own copy.  Lessons will begin the week of September 18th.

Sectionals

All students will participate in a weekly sectional rehearsal, which will take place during one recess period.  During this time students will meet in larger groups of like instruments to develop skills necessary to play and perform with others.  Such skills include: use of dynamics, phrasing, intonation, time & key signatures, and following a conductor.  Sectionals will start the week of September 25th.

Band Rehearsals

Beginning Band rehearsals will take place before school on Monday and Thursday mornings from 8:00 am to 8:45 am.  All students should plane to arrive 10 minutes early so that each rehearsal can start on time.  Our first Beginning Band rehearsal will take place on Monday, October 16th.

How do we obtain these lessons?

To enroll your child in the music program, simply return the registration form that will be sent home on Tuesday, September 12th.  All forms must be passed in no later than Thursday, September 14th.

The program also requires that each student provide his or her own musical instrument.

How do we obtain a musical instrument?

There are several ways to obtain an instrument.  The easiest way, unless you already own one or have access to one, is to rent an instrument through The Music Box.  As one of the areas finest musical instrument suppliers, The Music Box will offer you an excellent package for instrument rental and provide all the necessary equipment to get started in the music program.

How do I enroll in the Music Box Music rental program?

For your convenience, The Music Box will be visiting the King Philip Regional High School Cafeteria on Saturday morning, September 16th from 9:00-11:00am, at which time they will distribute instruments.  Parents should be prepared to pay for the initial rental of the instrument and method book by cash or check at that time.

What else is needed?

Your child will need a lesson book for his or her instrument.  This year we will use the Standard of Excellence method series, book I, which will be available on Saturday morning.

Band Fee

There is a one-time band fee of $100.00 to participate in the Freeman-Kennedy School Instrumental Music Program for the first year of study, due January 1, 2018.  Please feel free to contact the Superintendent’s office should financial concerns prevent your child from accessing our award-winning program.

What if I have any more questions?

For questions regarding lessons or other aspects of the program, please contact Mr. Fouracre via email at fouracre@norfolk.k12.ma.us. Questions about the rental program can be answered on Saturday, September 16th, from 9:00-11:00 by representatives of the Music Box Music Company.
