The Tiger Rising

After the death of his mother, Rob and his dad move to Lister, Florida to start a new life.  An outsider in this new community, Rob keeps his thoughts and feelings locked up inside his rash-covered body.  One day, Rob discovers a real-life caged tiger in the woods and decides to share his secret with the new girl in town, Sistine Bailey.  Find out what happens to Rob, Sistine, and the tiger in this heartwarming adventure.


Assignment:  Choose a symbol that represents you. Create an 8 ½ x 11 visual display of the symbol and provide a written description of how that symbol reveals the different aspects of your life.



Because of Winn-Dixie

After her dad gets a new job, ten year-old India Opal Buloni moves to Naomi, Florida, where she encounters a scraggly dog inside the local Winn Dixie grocery store.  Opal names the dog after the store, and because of Winn Dixie, Opal makes a lot of new friends.  She starts to learn about each of their stories, but more importantly, she starts to learn her own.  During this story, Opal discovers ten things about her mother that she never knew before.  Read this story to find out about Opal and Winn-Dixie’s journey together.


Assignment:  Create an 8 ½ x 11  visual display of ten things that characterize you.  Include a brief written description of each item.
